Which Ford Transit Alternator Should You Choose?The right Ford Transit alternator depends on engine family and generation, not just on the year. The same van body can hide very different charging systems – older diesels with a built-in vacuum pump, Duratorq diesels with a separate vacuum pump, and the latest 2.0 EcoBlue with a smart alternator and an auxiliary AGM battery. Ford Transit MK6 with 2.0 DI / 2.4 TDCiThe Transit MK6 (2000-2006) introduced the Duratorq family: 2.0 DI/TDCi and 2.4 DI/TDdi/TDCi. This generation was the first to drop the vacuum-pump alternator – brake vacuum is now generated by a separate pump. Transit MK7, early MK8 and Custom MK1 with 2.2 TDCiThe 2.2 TDCi is one of the most common Transit diesels. It runs in the Transit MK7 (2006-2013), early MK8 (2014-2016) and Transit Custom MK1 (2012-2016). The alternator works without a vacuum pump and delivers around 130-150 A. 2.2 TDCi alternator
Modern Transit and Custom with 2.0 EcoBlueIn the Transit MK9 (2019+), late MK8 (2016-2019), Transit Custom MK2 (2018-2023) and late Custom MK1 (2016-2018), the engine bay holds a smart alternator. Classic 2.5 diesel with vacuum pump (MK3-MK5)In Transit MK3, MK4 and MK5 diesel versions (2.5 D, 2.5 TD), the alternator carries an integrated vacuum pump on the back of the housing. It generates the vacuum used by the brake servo. When the unit fails, both charging and brake assistance get worse. Always replace it with the same vacuum-pump configuration. Transit Connect MK1 with 1.8 D / TD / TDCiThe Transit Connect MK1 (2002-2013) uses 1.8 Duratorq diesels and 1.8 Duratec petrol engines. Petrol MK2-MK4 (1.6 / 2.0 OHC)Classic petrol Transits with 1.6 OHC and 2.0 OHC engines used original-equipment Motorcraft or Lucas alternators. They are simpler, lower-output units (around 55-75 A).
