Opel Vivaro C EvolutionThe Opel Vivaro C, launched in 2019, represents the most significant transformation in the model’s development. After two generations closely linked to the Renault Trafic, the third iteration adopted the EMP2 platform following Opel/Vauxhall’s integration into Groupe PSA in 2017. This shift marked a clear departure from the earlier Renault-based engineering, positioning the Vivaro within a broader Stellantis strategy that unified multiple mid-size vans under a shared architecture across different brands.![]() Opel Vivaro C: EMP2 architecture and production strategyAt the time of its introduction, Opel confirmed that orders for the new Vivaro would begin in early 2019, with market availability planned for later that year. The company also highlighted the role of its Rüsselsheim engineering centre, which became responsible for developing light commercial vehicles within the PSA group. In the UK, the EMP2-based Vivaro was promoted as a domestically produced model, supported by further investment in the Luton plant to increase production capacity. Over time, Stellantis confirmed that this facility manufactures not only the Opel and Vauxhall Vivaro, but also related models such as the Peugeot Expert, Citroën Jumpy/Dispatch and Fiat Scudo. By mid-2023, total output of vans built on the Vivaro platform in Luton had reached approximately 1.5 million units. The initial engine lineup for the Vivaro C included 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre diesel units available in several power variants. A key development was the introduction of the fully electric Vivaro-e, offered with 50 kWh and 75 kWh battery options, which secured the International Van of the Year 2021 award. The range was later expanded with the Vivaro-e HYDROGEN variant, produced in Rüsselsheim and combining a fuel cell system with fast refuelling capability and a WLTP range exceeding 400 kilometres. A significant update arrived in 2024, bringing Opel’s new “Vizor” front-end design, a redesigned digital cockpit and improved electric driving range, reaching up to 350 km (WLTP) for the battery-electric version. Vivaro C therefore represents the transition to EMP2 architecture and electrification, defining a new phase in the model’s history shaped by group-level strategy rather than incremental evolution of earlier designs.
