Powertrain Options and Performance
The Ford Transit Custom MK3 is available with multiple powertrain options, ensuring flexibility for different operational needs. It offers diesel, plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and fully electric drivetrains. The 2.0L EcoBlue diesel engine is available in four power outputs: 110PS, 136PS, 150PS, and 170PS. A six-speed manual transmission comes as standard, while a new eight-speed automatic gearbox is optional for the 136PS and 170PS versions. For improved traction, an intelligent all-wheel-drive (AWD) system is available with the automatic transmission. Additionally, front-wheel-drive models with 136PS or 150PS can be equipped with a mechanical limited-slip differential (mLSD).
Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) System
The plug-in hybrid version is designed to balance efficiency with performance. It features a 2.5L Atkinson-cycle petrol engine combined with an 11.8kWh battery, generating a total of 232PS and offering an electric driving range of up to 55 km (WLTP). It includes multiple drive modes such as EV Now for all-electric operation and EV Charge to allow the engine to recharge the battery when needed. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is included for smooth power delivery.
Electric Version – E-Transit Custom
The fully electric E-Transit Custom features a 74kWh battery (64kWh usable), providing power to either a 100kW or 160kW motor (136PS or 217PS). The estimated driving range reaches up to 337 km (WLTP). This model supports DC fast charging up to 125kW, allowing a charge from 15% to 80% in approximately 41 minutes. AC charging at 11kW enables a full charge in around 8 hours. The electric version also includes Pro Power Onboard, which supplies up to 2.3kW of external power for tools and other equipment.
Load Capacity and Towing Capabilities
The Ford Transit Custom MK3 remains a leader in commercial vehicle practicality, offering substantial cargo volume and towing capacities. The cargo area provides approximately 5.8m3 (L1) or 6.8m3 (L2) of space, with a load-through bulkhead allowing objects up to 3.45m in length to be transported. A lowered load floor height (~575mm) enhances accessibility, particularly in urban environments where frequent loading and unloading are required.
The maximum payload varies by model: diesel-powered versions can carry up to 1,350kg, the PHEV variant up to 1,180kg, and the fully electric model up to 1,010kg. Towing capabilities also differ, with diesel models capable of towing up to 2,800kg, PHEV models rated for 2,000kg, and the electric version able to tow up to 2,300kg. These capacities make the Transit Custom MK3 a highly versatile option for businesses requiring both efficiency and utility.
Ford has also optimized the van’s interior for maximum usability, integrating additional tie-down points and power outlets in the cargo space. Improved aerodynamics and enhanced structural elements contribute to better energy efficiency and an overall improved driving experience.
Safety and Smart Technology
The Ford Transit Custom MK3 is packed with modern driver assistance systems to enhance safety and convenience. Standard features include ABS, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), airbags, Lane Keeping Assist, Intelligent Speed Assist, Pre-Collision Assist, and Rear Parking Sensors. Optional upgrades include Blind Spot Monitoring with Trailer Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Reverse Brake Assist, providing additional support for drivers in busy environments.
Inside the cabin, the van is equipped with a 13-inch SYNC 4 touchscreen infotainment system, which includes navigation, multimedia controls, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and 5G connectivity. A digital instrument cluster provides real-time driving information. The steering wheel is designed to tilt and function as a workspace, an innovative feature ideal for professionals who need to complete paperwork or take breaks while on the road.
Other available options include heated front seats, keyless entry, and an enhanced climate control system. Additionally, the Pro Power Onboard system (available on PHEV and electric models) allows external power usage for tools and other devices, making it particularly useful for contractors and mobile workers.
Transit Custom MK3 vs. Tourneo Custom
While the Transit Custom MK3 is designed primarily for cargo transportation, its counterpart, the Tourneo Custom, is built as a passenger-focused variant. The Tourneo accommodates up to nine passengers (diesel/PHEV) or eight (electric) and offers a more refined interior, flexible seating arrangements, and additional comfort-oriented features. It is specifically engineered for passenger comfort, delivering a quieter ride and a more premium cabin experience.
Both models share the same platform, powertrain options, and technology, but the Tourneo is optimized for family use, executive transport, or shuttle services. The second and third-row seats can be removed or reconfigured, enabling multiple seating layouts, including conference-style arrangements. The Tourneo also includes extra safety features such as rear passenger airbags and a dedicated climate control system for passenger convenience.
Conversely, the Transit Custom MK3 prioritizes utility and cargo efficiency, featuring a reinforced load floor, extra storage solutions, and work-ready configurations. These distinctions ensure that both models cater to specific user needs while maintaining Ford’s reputation for reliability and advanced vehicle technology. |
