Ford Transit Custom MK1 – A Redefinition of the Mid-Size Van

When the Ford Transit Custom MK1 made its debut in 2012, it didn’t just enter the market—it reshaped it. Bridging the gap between the compact Transit Connect and the full-size Transit, this model was purpose-built for professionals who needed more than just cargo space. Engineered at Ford’s Dunton Technical Centre in the UK and assembled in Kocaeli, Turkey, the Custom was designed with European roads and businesses in mind. Its blend of robust payload capacity, cutting-edge safety features, and onboard technology earned it the distinguished International Van of the Year award in 2013.

Dominating the Market Across Europe

Ford’s vision with the MK1 was clear—and successful. By 2021, it had become the top-selling light commercial vehicle in the European Union, with nearly 124,600 registrations that year alone. In the UK, it remained a staple of the van market for over a decade, widely adopted by contractors, couriers, and public sector fleets. Its broad appeal stemmed from its range of variants—panel vans, double cab-in-vans, and the Tourneo Custom for passenger use—all offering exceptional value and flexibility.

Setting the Bar for Van Safety

Transit Custom MK1 made headlines as the first one-tonne van to achieve a five-star Euro NCAP rating back in 2012. This milestone was the result of its solid structural design and comprehensive occupant protection. Ford continued to enhance its safety suite with features like lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and blind spot detection. The van’s commitment to safety was reaffirmed in 2021 when it received the Euro NCAP Gold Award for commercial vehicle safety.

2018 Refresh – Blending Tech and Driver Comfort

To stay ahead of evolving demands, the MK1 underwent a major facelift in early 2018. Visually, it gained a new front grille, sleeker headlights, and a more aerodynamic shape. Inside, Ford introduced higher-quality finishes, a reimagined dashboard layout, and SYNC 3—an infotainment system with voice control, touchscreen navigation, and smartphone compatibility. This update turned the MK1 from a solid work vehicle into a refined, connected mobile office.
