Europe's most stolen vans: Transit, Sprinter or Master?Across Europe, vans keep transport, construction and service businesses moving. Their widespread use also makes them a regular entry in theft records. Whether a Transit, Sprinter or Master tops the list is not a Europe-wide constant; it changes from one country to another. Figures from the UK, France and the Netherlands demonstrate why Europe has no universal number-one target. National fleets differ, as does the popularity of each van. Any useful comparison must separate total theft volumes from the likelihood of one particular vehicle being stolen. A van sold in very large numbers will inevitably generate more theft reports. Illustration: Transit Center UK van theft: Transit leads by volumeBritain provides the strongest headline. Direct Line's analysis of DVLA records found 11,273 van thefts in 2024, including 5,906 Ford Transits. The Transit range therefore made up over half of all vans reported stolen. 5906 Ford Transits stolen in 2024 1492 Mercedes Sprinters stolen 52% of stolen vans were Transits
Data source: DVLA / Direct Line Business Insurance Raw totals do not tell the entire story, because the Transit is also Britain's largest van population. When registrations are used to calculate exposure, the 2024 theft rates for the Peugeot Boxer and Mercedes Sprinter exceeded the Transit's. The respective figures per 1,000 vehicles were 7.7 for the Boxer, 7.5 for the Sprinter and 5.8 for the Transit. The Transit variants most often reported stolenA variant-level DVLA comparison for 2024-2025 adds useful context. Transit 350 led with 677 thefts in 2024 and 632 in 2025, while several Transit Custom derivatives also appeared near the top.
Data source: analysis of DVLA data for 2024-2025 Reported thefts of the Transit Custom 300 Base climbed from 138 to 222. The rise was steeper still for the Transit Custom 300 Trend, which went from 49 to 116. French figures put Renault Master firstFrance produced a different ranking in 2024. Renault Master III led with 988 thefts, ahead of Peugeot Boxer III, Renault Trafic III and Citroen Jumper III. Ford Transit was outside the top ten.
Data source: Argos, 2024 commercial vehicle theft figures for France For 2025, France Assureurs and Argos changed the basis of comparison. Vehicles were no longer ordered only by total cases, but by the number of thefts in relation to the registered population. Fiat Ducato III then came first, followed by Peugeot Boxer III, Citroen Jumper III, Iveco Daily III and Renault Master III. The change does not show that thieves abandoned the Master. It reflects a different metric. Frequency is more informative about the exposure of one vehicle; the 2024 table simply counted every reported theft. Dutch trend: fewer Sprinters, more Transit CustomsStichting VbV records detailed Dutch data for light commercial vehicles. A total of 2,055 were stolen in 2025, representing a 6% annual increase. Among individual derivatives, the 2013-2018 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter remained first with 149 thefts, but this was sharply down from 267 in 2024. Transit Custom thefts developed in the opposite direction.
Data source: Stichting Verzekeringsbureau Voertuigcriminaliteit (VbV) The first six months of 2026 brought another shift. The 2012-2023 Transit Custom / Tourneo Custom family recorded 60 thefts, more than any other individual light-commercial model group. That was 76% higher year on year; Mercedes Vito followed with 51. Does the Transit have a particular theft vulnerability?Counts of complete vehicles stolen cannot, by themselves, establish that a Transit is easier to take than a Sprinter, Boxer or Master. Britain's large Transit fleet heavily influences the total. In the 2024 rate per 1,000 registrations, Boxer and Sprinter both recorded poorer results. Businesses must also consider losses from inside the vehicle, not only theft of the van. Thieves frequently target power tools and other equipment stored in the cargo area. UK police figures for 2024 included 12,414 thefts of tools from vehicles, equal to 49% of all recorded tool thefts. Online footage documents many attacks on Transit and Transit Custom vans. Offenders may force the lock, damage the outer door panel or bend a section of the door. Other makes face the same techniques, but the Transit is so common in British commercial fleets that these incidents receive particular attention. Manufacturers' response underlines the scale of the threat. Ford now provides extra cargo-door security, protection against lock interference and connected alerts that notify owners of suspicious activity near the van. Illustration: Transit Center Which is stolen most: Transit, Sprinter or Master? The evidence does not support one Europe-wide winner. Transit dominates Britain's total theft count, yet its risk per registered vehicle is not the highest. Renault Master III had France's largest total in 2024, whereas Fiat Ducato III led the country's 2025 frequency table. The Sprinter was a long-standing leader in the Netherlands, although recent results point to rapidly rising Transit Custom thefts. Local fleet composition explains much of the variation. The most common vans will usually generate the largest number of theft reports, so totals are not a direct rating of a model's security. Cargo protection deserves the same attention as protection of the van itself. For a working vehicle, a break-in may mean damaged doors, missing tools and equipment, and days when the business cannot operate. For Transits used commercially, our range includes Ford Transit parts covering numerous generations and specifications. |
